Taskforce begins demolition of illegal structures in Agbor after one year abatement notice

Delta State Taskforce on Environment in collaboration with lka North-East Local Government Council as well as the Environmental Health Officers has commenced demolition of illegal structures, shanties and containerised shops built on top public drainage system as well as under high tension that is defacing the aesthetic beauty of the town.

The operation was led by the State taskforce Chairman, Hon. Sylvester Oromoni alongside the Coordinators of Delta North, South/Central in the early hours on Thursday 20th May, 2021 after the expiration of one year abatement notice served residents.

Speaking during the exercise, the state taskforce Chairman on environment, Hon. Sylvester Oromoni said all illegal structures, attachments built on top public drainage system along major roads, especially the popular Old Lagos Asaba road, Abraka Owa road, Owa Ekei/Owa Alero road etc, are defacing the environment, thereby causing unnecessary road traffic as well as obstructing free flow of water during rainfall.

Oromoni expressed displeasure over the deliberate act by traders occupying public road to the detriment of other road users. He also raised alarm on traders under high tension, saying they are taking risk of their lives, stressing that what the state government is doing is not witch hunting them rather is protecting them from unnecessary danger. He reiterated that the primary responsibility of any government is to protect the lives and properties of its citizens, hence Deltans should cooperate with Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa led administration to serve them better.

He noted that Agbor is the home town of the governor, hence residents are expected to support him to keep the state clean. Oromoni stressed that shop owners trading on top drainage and public walkways are the architects of most traffic jam in our roads, thereby making life uncomfortable to residents and other road users.

He therefore, pass a stern warning to traders in Abavo, lsele-Uku, Umunede, Ubulu-Uku, Ogwashi-Uku and other neighbouring towns whose shops are built on top public drainage system, under high tension and pedestrian walkways to immediately vacate the premises or risk demolition by the state taskforce, he stated.
