Children Day: Bayoko Urges Students To Be Proactive ln Their Choice of Role Models

Children Day: Bayoko Urges Students To Be Proactive ln Their Choice of Role Models

Aruoriwo Ivovi

Students in Delta State have been charged to take deliberate actions in choosing and imbibing the morality of those they look up to as their role models in the society.

The Delta State Functioning Secretary to the State Government (FSSG) and Head of Service (HOS), Mr. Reginald Bayoko mni, gave the charge during a book review, organised by the Asaba Reading Club at the Royal Mira international school in Asaba, the state capital.

The book review, titled “the Whip and the Bar” and centred around the life of Mr. Bayoko attracted students and teachers from some selected schools within the Asaba capital territory.

The FSSG and HoS, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary (PS) in the Ministry of Transport, Mrs Anastasia Nwanze, advised students to carefully select their mentors based on morality.

Mr. Bayoko, while calling on students to imbibe the culture of reading, stated that “developing reading skills as promoted by the Asaba Reading Club was fundamental in transforming the lives of their target audience and change outcomes for Children and community.

While advocating for the establishment of reading clubs in all schools in the state to revive reading culture, Mr. Bayoko noted that “we want every child to experience the joy and power of becoming a lifelong reader.”

He stressed on discipline and hard work, adding that the reasonable and respectful way students could distinguish themselves among their peers was through active engagements in deep reading of books that would open up their horizon of thinking and viewing the society.

He thanked the author of the book and organisers of the event for the initiative, adding that it was a beautiful educational programme for students and a veritable platform to transform the next generation who would shortly be in charge of governance in the country.

Earlier, the Director General (DG) of the state Orientation Bureau, Eugene Uzum Esq, who was the guest speaker on the topic “Child Development : the Role of Parental Guidance,”

stated that the role of parents in a child’s life was limitless.

He listed some parental responsibilities to include nursing, counseling, teaching of religious guidance, doing the right thing at the right time, social monitoring, instilling discipline, directing the child to good success channels and enjoined parents to be alive to their responsibilities.

He posited that failed parental responsibility has given rise to cultism, cyber crime, rituals and occultism and other social vices that have led many children astray and pleaded with children to at all time listen to the advice of their parents and also pray for them.

Uzum also enjoined parents to send their children to school, whether private or public, while considering their financial status, adding that it was the only legacy they could bequeath to their children, even as he admonished students not to take the opportunity given them to go to school for granted.

The writer of the book, Mrs. Catherine Agbontai, while paying glowing tributes to Mr. Bayoko, whom she said gave her the opportunity to interview him despite his tight schedule, said that the contents of the chat with him metamorphosed into a literature book for students to analyse and impact on their day to day activities.

Oromoni expressed displeasure over the deliberate act by traders occupying public road to the detriment of other road users. He also raised alarm on traders under high tension, saying they are taking risk of their lives, stressing that what the state government is doing is not witch hunting them rather is protecting them from unnecessary danger. He reiterated that the primary responsibility of any government is to protect the lives and properties of its citizens, hence Deltans should cooperate with Gov. Ifeanyi Okowa led administration to serve them better.

He noted that Agbor is the home town of the governor, hence residents are expected to support him to keep the state clean. He admonished those that are not dedicated to the work and advised them to either take an exit route and sit up or he will show them the way out. Speaking on their behalf, the zonal coordinator promised a better service delivery but complained of non availability of operational vehicles which has hampered their operations. The Chairman promised them that he will do his best and has not relented in ensuring that they get an operational vehicle.

In another development, on the Chairman's way from lka North-East, he was forced  to stop at Abraka road following a serious traffic gridlock along the way. It was observed that most of the traders, especially the motorcycle riders parked their bikes on both sides of the road while other traders shaded their goods on the walkways, thereby causing serious traffic problems on that axis. While most of the traders were heaping refuse inside the drainage around the premises.

The Chairman, Oromoni and his team ensured that the drainage was cleared immediately and the heap of refuse tied in sacks and dumped inside the drainage were evacuated. He frowned at the attitude of the traders and warned that such should never happen again or else he will seal their shops around such area for one week.

OPL281: Group Call on FG, NNPC to Revoke license from TCN PLC Over inefficiency to operate

OPL281: Group Call on FG, NNPC to Revoke license from TCN PLC Over lack of capacity to operate

Warri_____ A group under the aegis of Host Communities Right Protection Movement (HCRPM) in Burutu Local Government Area of Delta State, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari led Federal Government and the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation NNPC, to as a matter of urgency revoke OPL281 contract from Transnational Corperation of Nigeria PLC, over what it described as inefficiency as well as lack of capacity to operate since the oil bloc was awarded to the company in 2008.

The group made the call on Tuesday 18th May, 2021 in Burutu lsland immediately after meeting with host communities, noted that the call became necessary based on the facts that the company Transnational Corporation of Nigeria PLC lack the manpower and the technological Know-How to operate the oil bloc since it was awarded to them over thirteen years ago.

The group stressed that the host communities had given the company Freedom To Operate (FTO) since 2016, but unfortunately the company has done nothing up to date simply because they lacked the capacity to delve into the oil and gas sector.

They however, urged President Buhari led federal government as well as NNPC to withdraw OPL281 contract from Transnational Corporation of Nigeria PLC and reassign it to a competent indigenous companies that have the  experience in the oil and gas sector to operate.

Reacting to the development, President of the group, Mr. Timpamowei Preye, said that since Transnational Corperation of Nigeria PLC, acquired OPL281 located within the waters and lands of Burutu Local Government Area, they have been deceiving the host Communities with the false hope of entries to develop the oil bloc since 2008. He noted that the company have been playing one prank or the other to deceive the Host Communities in one hand, and the regulating institutions on the other end.

According to him, said: " It is appalling and heart-throbing to note that Transnational Corperation of Nigeria PLC, operators of OPL281, located within the territorial waters and lands of Burutu Local Government Area have been constantly deceiving the host Communities with the false hope of developing the block since 2008. From the above realization, we are calling on the Federal, State and Local Government agencies of Nigeria and their agencies responsible for the administration of Nigeria oil and gas as a matter of urgency revoke OPL281 from Transnational Corperation of Nigeria  and reassign it to a  more indigenous companies with the experience in the oil and gas sector. It should be noted that all the host Communities are peaceful and accommodating and ever ready to accept any indigenous company  ready for full industrial operations"

The group further stated  that the host Communities have  given Transnational Corperation of Nigeria  the freedom to operate (FTO)  since 2016, but up to date, nothing has been done on site simply because they lack the capacity and the technological know-how to delve into the oil and gas sector. The group press further their demand that until OPL281 is revoked and reassigned to indigenous companies that have the requisite capacity, they will keep pushing on and involve their legislators to come into the matter. They said, while others are benefiting from their oil blocks because their operators have come to start, Transnational Corperation of Nigeria  are sitting in a block that was assigned to them since 2006.

Host Communities Right Protection Movement (HCRPM) further threatened to embark on a one thousand man match to the State capital, Asaba and extend same to Abuja if their demands are not met.

It is a policy in the oil and gas sector that when an oil block is allocated to a company, after 10 years if the company fails to develop it, the federal government is at liberty to revoke it, the statement adds.

Shocking As Man Absconds From Marriage Ceremony Over lncessant Demands

Shocking As Man Absconds From Marriage Ceremony Over lncessant Demands

Drama as bridegroom walks out of engagement ceremony in Isiala Ngwa due to extortion.

He paid N100,000 to cater for food, tents, chairs and a public address system.

He was also made to set aside N100,000 as the bride price that the two families had agreed on.

Okwudili was asked to add N20,000 to the bride price because he had already impregnated the girl.

He was slapped with a N10,000 fine for making a detour to the wrong path and ending up in a different homestead instead of the girl's.

He was also asked to pay N15,000 to appease the elders who had become tired of waiting for his arrival.

Drama however ensued when twelve girls covered in loose robes from head to toe were paraded before Okwudili and he was asked to guess who his fiancée was.

He pointed at the wrong woman and that lead to yet another fine of N15,000.

The decisive moment specifically was when the elders demanded for a refund of the total sum of N450,000 that had been paid as the girl's school fees and upkeep since she started primary school!

Fuming with anger which he tried his best to hide, Okwudili excused himself to visit a nearby latrine and disappeared!

He switched off his phone and was last seen in a bus heading to Lagos from Owerri.

Delta 2023: Mulade Calls on Urhobo Nation to support ljaw Governor, says Ijaws are ready for all-inclusive Govt

Delta 2023: Mulade Calls on Urhobo Nation to support ljaw Governor, says Ijaws are ready for all-inclusive Govt

Ahead of the 2023 general elections, the Ijaw people of Delta State say they are very prepared to give Deltans the good governance it deserves if supported by other ethnic groups in the State. A prominent Ijaw traditional High Chief from Gbaramatu Kingdom of Delta State, Comrade (Chief) Mulade Sheriff disclosed this in Warri at the weekend while speaking with newsmen on the 2023 governorship candidacy in Delta State.

Chief Mulade stressed that an Ijaw candidate is preferred for Delta State gubernatorial seat, and assured Deltans that the Bold Movement for an Ijaw Governor in 2023 would soon be launched. The Ibe-Seremowei of Gbaramatu Kingdom in Warri South West LGA of Delta State expressed his readiness to lead the Bold Movement aimed at lobbying and advocating for support from all other ethnic groups in the State, whom he said got the massive and genuine support of Ijaw people in the past, facilitating the achievement of peaceful power transition in Delta State since 1999.

He explained that the Bold Movement for 2023 Governorship race in the State is based on the premise that no single ethnic group can produce the Governor of Delta State without the support of others, which is why the Ijaw people want the cooperation and support of other tribes for a fair, equitable and just power rotation in the State.

He noted that the Ijaw people gave maximum support to Delta Central, Delta South and Delta North Senatorial Districts to produce the Governor, while also providing the economic base for the overall development of the State, adding that it is now the turn of Ijaw to pilot the State's affairs as the Governor.

Chief Mulade who is a peace advocate said the Bold Movement had consulted far and wide with critical stakeholders in Ijaw land and therefore makes bold to invite all capable Ijaw sons and daughters who have the ability to pilot the affairs of the State as Governor, to indicate and declare their interest irrespective of their party affiliations.

The renowned peace and environmental rights advocate emphasized that the Ijaws would not impose a candidate on Deltans, as they have commenced an in-house shopping for the most qualified, competent and capable candidate that would be widely accepted by all ethnic groups in Delta State.

He described the power rotation formula among the different Senatorial Districts of the State, initiated by a one-time Governor, Chief James Onanefe Ibori, as a laudable idea of fairness, equity and justice. He however, noted that the first round of the governorship (Osusu) rotation formula rounded off with the Delta North, producing Senator (Dr) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa as the current Governor.

While commending Chief Ibori for midwifing the unwritten governorship zoning arrangement in the State since 1999, Chief Mulade said the three senatorial districts of the State have taken their turns to produce the Governor, sressing that the zoning arrangement does not provide that the first Senatorial District to produce the Governor should start the second round of the Governorship (Osusu) to produce the Governor again.

He said the Bold Movement wants a display of maturity, understanding, cooperation and oneness by all Deltans towards achieving fairness, equity and justice for the Ijaw people who have been very supportive by sacrificing their natural resources for the overall development of the State

Citing the economic contributions of the Ijaw ethnic group as a factor, the Peace Ambassador lamented that the area that contributes more to the revenue of the State, is the most neglected and impoverished, and therefore urged other ethnic groups particularly Urhobo, to support Ijaw for the 2023 number one seat.

He said the Bold Movement would critically examine candidates from all political parties, and ensure that Ijaw people unite to project a single candidate for the Dennis Osadebe Government House, Asaba come 2023, for the benefit of all Deltans.

Lagos to launch ‘last mile buses’ to replace okada

Lagos to launch ‘last mile buses’ to replace okada

Babajide Sanwo-Olu, governor of Lagos, has announced that the state will launch “last mile buses” next week to serve as alternatives to commercial motorcycles, popularly known as okada.

In January 2020, the Lagos government banned commercial motorcyles and tricycles in 15 local councils of the state.

The government had said okada was not “part of our greater Lagos journey”, adding that it was “not an enduring trade”.

Speaking during a stakeholders’ meeting on security in Lagos on Monday, Sanwo-Olu said the state will roll out the buses in phases

The buses are expected to serve as an alternative means to get into streets that cannot be readily accessed by the Bus Rapid Transport (BRT) system.

The governor said despite the ban, many okada and tricycle operators have continued to flagrantly disobey the law and, in some cases, resist enforcement by engaging in organised attacks on law enforcement agencies.

“We are excited to announce that next week, we will be launching what we term the ‘last mile buses’ that will ply inner roads and safely get commercial passengers to their final destinations,” Sanwo-Olu said.

“We envisage deploying over 500 of these buses to alleviate the pain associated with the restriction of motorcycle and tricycle operations.

“We also envisage that this initiative will also generate employment opportunities for Lagosians, including the commercial motorcyclist operators, who will be employed as operators of the last mile buses.”

Noting that no society can make progress amid “such haughty display of lawlessness and criminality”, Sanwo-Olu said the government is committed to maintaining law and order in the state.

“Our mission of attaining a greater Lagos can only be achieved when we all resolve to live in an orderly manner,” he said.

Some People Are Mercilessly Against This Country’, Buhari Laments

Some People Are Mercilessly Against This Country’, Buhari Laments

President Muhammadu Buhari has lamented over the security challenges confronting the country.

The President lamented that despite the closure of the borders to control the smuggling of arms and ammunition, “Some people are mercilessly against this country.”

“We closed the borders to control the smuggling of petroleum products, and check the influx of smuggled goods, arms and ammunition.

“That was when the Comptroller General of Customs called me, saying 40 tankers laden with petrol had been impounded. I told him to sell the fuel, sell the trucks, and put the money in the treasury”.

The President stated this on Friday, during the 6th regular meeting with the Presidential Economic Advisory Council (PEAC), led by Professor Doyin Salami in Abuja.

President Buhari charged the leadership at every level to go back to the basics, noting that a bottom-up approach was necessary, from ward to local council, states, and federal.

He decried the situation in which some unscrupulous people tried to undermine every policy of the government, irrespective of the good it was meant to achieve for the country.

“They still brought arms and ammunition into the country, brought in rice in vehicles and motorcycles. I said shoot anyone found illegally with AK-47, yet they haven’t stopped. People must show consideration for their own country.”

President Buhari pledged that the Federal Government will focus on the greater development of irrigation facilities in the country, and encourage more people into agriculture.

He said agriculture was a good way for the country to overcome economic challenges confronting it, stressing: “We need to go back to the land. Technology is doing away with petroleum, but we are lucky we have other resources; Gas, vast arable land, which we are not using enough.”

The President was responding to disclosure by Prof Salami, in his presentation, that only 2% of land under cultivation is irrigated, recommending that apart from government efforts, incentives are needed for private people to enter the sector.

PEAC submitted that the global economy has continued to improve as COVID infections drop and the roll-out of vaccination intensifies, adding that the Nigerian economy, though out of recession, remains fragile with inflation rising, unemployment high, and external account weak.

Policy, the economic advisory body said, “must urgently address the challenges of rising prices.”

Among other issues recommended by PEAC are; decisive end to all forms of insecurity in the country, mobilization of resources for investment, hastened implementation of agricultural reform policies, the passage of the Petroleum Industry Bill (PIB) as a basis for revitalizing the industry, poverty reduction, employment generation, and incentives for private investment in irrigation, to promote all-year-round farming.

Insecurity: Benue To Recruit Community Volunteer Guards

As part of measures to tackle the security challenges in Benue, stakeholders in the state have sought the recruitment of Community Volunteer Guards.

The demand followed a meeting of the stakeholders held on Thursday in Makurdi, the state capital with Governor Samuel Ortom in attendance.

According to a communique issued at the end of the meeting, stakeholders commended the efforts of security agencies in tackling the security threats in the state.

“The meeting considers the fact that in the face of banditry, kidnapping, herdsmen attacks and other crimes the Security Agencies have done well,” the communique partly read.

“The meeting, however, resolved that the renewed attacks on the people by armed herdsmen have overstretched Security Agencies in the State.

“Therefore, the Benue State Government should fully enforce the “Law to Provide for the Establishment of Community Volunteer Guards (Vigilante) and for the Purposes Connected Therewith” which was enacted in the year 2000.”

Benue stakeholders also passed a vote of confidence on Governor Samuel Ortom for his administration’s efforts in nipping in the bud the menace of insecurity.

Read the communique issued after the Benue Stakeholders’ Meeting today in Makurdi:

STAKEHOLDERS MEETING OF BENUE STATE HELD ON 6TH MAY, 2021 AT THE NEW BANQUET HALL, BENUE PEOPLE’S HOUSE, MAKURDI

RESOLUTIONS

The Benue State Stakeholders Meeting appreciates Security Agencies for their efforts in ensuring relative peace in parts of the State. The meeting considers the fact that in the face of banditry, kidnapping, herdsmen attacks and other crimes the Security Agencies have done well.

The meeting, however, resolved that the renewed attacks on the people by armed herdsmen have overstretched Security Agencies in the State.

Therefore, the Benue State Government should fully enforce the “Law to Provide for the Establishment of Community Volunteer Guards (Vigilante) and for the Purposes Connected Therewith” which was enacted in the year 2000.

The State Government has been mandated to support the Vigilante with logistics as provided in the Law.

Recruitment of the Vigilante should be carried out in the 23 Local Government Areas of Benue State.

The meeting reinforced the commitment of Benue people to the enforcement of the Open Grazing Prohibition and Ranches Establishment Law, 2017.

The meeting emphasized the need for all stakeholders to join hands in tackling insecurity in Benue State devoid of political, religious and ethnic sentiments.

The meeting unanimously passed a vote of confidence on the Governor for his efforts in providing security in the State. The motion for the vote of confidence was moved by leaders of the three main Socio-Cultural Organizations in Benue State; Mzough-U-Tiv, Ochetoha, K’Idoma and Omini ‘Igede.

Oromoni Reaffirms Commitment To Keeping Delta Clean, Safe For Residents

Oromoni Reaffirms Commitment To Keeping Delta Clean, Safe For Residents

The Chairman of the Delta State Taskforce on Environment, Hon. Sylvester Oromoni has assured residents across the state of a clean and hygienic environment, suitable for habitation.

He made this call on Friday 7th May, 2021, in Warri, during a Press briefing with journalists, where he noted that the ongoing demolition exercise is not to witch-hunt anybody, rather it is meant to keep the aesthetics as it is done in other civilized environments.

Speaking on his achievements so far since assumption of office, he said that Warri/Uvwie and its environs are gradually coming back to life in terms of  beautification and removal of illegal structures.

According to him, "What Delta state government is doing is to make sure Deltans live in a safe and serene environment. Those illegal structures we demolished under high tension, walk-ways and drainages are for the general interest of Deltans.

"There are series of reported cases of  death last year as a result of slit high tension wire  at PTI junction by Agbor Park in Warri. Cases like that can be prevented if people distance themselves from trading under high tension wire", Oromoni stated.

He equally called on residents across the state to always keep their drainage system clean, especially now that raining season is fast approaching, "The menace of yearly flood ravaging our homes can be curbed if only we regularly clear our gutters thoroughly, so as to ease the free flow of waters through natural canals", he added.

The Taskforce boss also frowned at the attitude of some politicians whom he expected to join hands with the government to achieve her aim of a healthy environment, rather they are using their supporters to truncate government's efforts.

Responding to questions in the areas of rampant dredging activities in various communities, especially Warri, Ughelli and its environs, Hon Oromoni said those dredging close to residential homes without EIA permit are illegal dredgers and will be arrested in no distant time.

"Before you embark on dredging business, one must first of all obtain license from the State Ministry of Environment for approval of designated area to operate. Therefore, anyone caught without  permit license is illegal and the state government will deal decisively with such persons according to the law", he said.

He restated that stopping tricycles otherwise known as keke from plying Delta highways remain his top priority. "You can't see that happen in other states. I had a meeting with the State Secretary of their union and agreed that they are only permitted to use the road between the hours of 6am-7am and 6pm-7pm to enable them go to their work places and return back in the evening. We may not have achieved that now, but will sure achieve that", Oromoni vowed.

Speaking further, he reiterated that "Our mandate areas are all the pilot cities and we are doing our best to touch all. By next week, we will storm Agbor for a serious operation", he said.

Hon Oromoni, however, appealed to residents to obey the State government policies, stressing that the laws are made for the wellbeing and general interest of all Deltans.

He also called on those living in coastal areas to be conscious of the rising level of water as predicted by NIMET that there would be flooding this year.

Oromoni also thanked Warri Local Government Council Chairman, Dr. Michael Tidi and his counterpart in Uvwie, Hon Ramson Onoyake for their cooperation in returning the metropolitan city of Warri to her original state.

Ayakoromo Bridge: Onduku tackle Gov. Okowa, Augoye to release funds to contractor

Ayakoromo Bridge: Onduku tackle Gov. Okowa, Augoye to release funds to contractor

Francis Tayor

An ljaw youth activist cum community development advocate, Comrade Oyinbi Onduku has appealed to the governor of Delta State, His. Excellency, Sen (Dr.) Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa and the Commissioner for Works Delta State, Chief. James Augoye to release funds to the contractor  as they earlier promised for the speedy completion of Ayakoromo bridge.

Comrade Onduku who is the National Coordinator, Concerned Citizens For lzon-Ebe Development (CCFID), made the appeal  in Jeddo Okpe, the country home of the honorable Commissioner for Works, Chief. Augoye, during a meeting with his kinsmen decried that Ayakoromo bridge in Burutu Local Government Area of the state is currently at standstill due to paucity of funds.

According to Onduku, speaking with the press after the meeting, said Ayakoromo bridge project was awarded since 2014 by the immediate past governor of Delta state, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan to Zerock Construction Nig. Ltd, a Lebanese company with the intention to link up rural communities in Burutu, Ughelli South, Warri South-West and some parts of Bomadi local government area to urban cities. But unfortunately, the current administration had been playing politics with the bridge as a campaign strategy at any campaign ground during 2015 and 2019 governorship elections. After winning the elections with the support and votes of riverine ljaw  communities, the reverse is the case. To develop the area becomes an excuse.

It would be recalled that, the state governor, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa delegated the Commissioner for Works, Chief. James Augoye in November 2020 to inspect the work done so far in Ayakoromo bridge after series of protest by indigenes of the community. At the project site with the community leaders and the contractor, Gov. Okowa through the Commissioner made promise to release two hundred million naira (#200,000 000 00) monthly to the contractor so as to enable him finish the project on time before 2023. Unfortunately, all the statements made where mere political talks, no money had been released to the contractor as we speak.

" As l speak to you now, the contractor has leave site because there is no money to work. The government of the day is not sincere to ljaw people. If not, what takes Gov. Okowa to complete Ayakoromo bridge within a year and take the glory for a job well done. If the government can commission bridge, road, school projects in other parts of the state, it is expected of him to do the same in the riverine areas. I am appealing to His. Excellency, Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa and the Commissioner for works, Chief. James Augoye to show some level of  commitment and sincerity to riverine dwellers by releasing funds to complete Ayakoromo bridge because that bridge is of great economic importance to riverine dwellers. It is a pity for government to construct a single bridge project over seven years without completion. Show commitment and sincerity to ljaw people in terms of project execution, Onduku charged Gov. Okowa."
