Abacha's Loot: U.S. Repatriates Another $20.6M After 24yrs in Dead

Abacha's Loot: U.S. Repatriates Another $20.6M After 24yrs in Dead

The United States Department of Justice (DoJ) has repatriated more than $20.6 million worth of assets linked to Nigeria former Head of State, the late Gen Sani Abacha and his associates.

The DoJ in a statement on Thursday, November 17, 2022, said that the transfer of funds “is in accordance with an August 23 agreement between the governments to repatriate assets the United States forfeited that were traceable to kleptocracy of the former Nigerian dictator.”

“The forfeited assets represent corrupt monies laundered during and after the military regime of General Abacha, who became head of state in Nigeria through a military coup on Nov. 17, 1993,” the statement read.

According to a statement published on the DoJ website, the repatriation brings the total amount forfeited and returned by the US in this case to approximately $332.4m.

The transfer of funds ultimately stems from a 2014 judgement in the District of Columbia, ordering the forfeiture of approximately $500 million worth of assets linked to the former dictator.

The forfeited assets represent corrupt monies laundered during and after the military regime of Abacha, who became Head of State through a military coup on November 17, 1993, and held that position until his death on June 8, 1998.

The complaint filed in the case alleged that Abacha, his son Mohammed, their associate, Abubakar Bagudu, and others, embezzled, misappropriated, and extorted billions of dollars from the government coffers and others, and then laundered their criminal proceeds through US financial institutions and transactions.

The statement read, ‘’The United Kingdom’s cooperation in the investigation, restraint, and enforcement of the US judgment, along with the valuable contributions of Nigeria and other law enforcement partners around the world, including the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, as well as those of the Justice Department’s Office of International Affairs, have been instrumental to the recovery of these funds.

‘’Under the agreement signed in August, the US agreed to transfer 100 per cent of the net forfeited assets to Nigeria to support three critical infrastructure projects in Nigeria that were previously authorised by Nigerian President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) and the Nigerian legislature.

‘’The $20,637,622.27 marks a slight reduction from the $23m announced in August due primarily to exchange rate fluctuations between British pounds sterling and US dollars. The funds governed by this agreement will help finance the Second Niger Bridge, the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, and the Abuja-Kano road – investments that will benefit the citizens.

The department appreciated the extensive assistance provided by the governments of the United Kingdom, Nigeria, Jersey, and France in this investigation.

It added that the case was brought under the Kleptocracy Asset Recovery Initiative by a team of dedicated prosecutors in the Criminal Division’s Money Laundering and Asset Recovery Section working in partnership with the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

Ezekiel lambasts Omo-Agege Over Tinubu's Disregard for Delta Monarchs

Ezekiel lambast Omo-Agege, Oluremi over Tinubu's Disregard for Delta Monarchs

Warri _____ The Senior Special Assistant to the governor of Delta State on Security Matters, Comrade Daniel Pere Ezekiel, has lambasted the Deputy Senate President and the APC Gubernatorial Candidate for 2023 Delta State Governorship elections, Sen. Ovie Omo-Agege as well as Sen. Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu over the nonchalant attitude of the All Progressive Congress, APC Presidential Candidate, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu's deliberate disregard for traditional institutions in Warri during his recent campaign visit to Delta State on Saturday.

This was made known in a statement released on Monday in Warri signed by himself and made available to news men.

The statement which was titled: “Bola Tinubu Flagrant Disrespect for Delta State Traditional Institution is Highly Condemnable” said, the action of Tinubu showed he wasn’t fit to rule Nigeria.
According to Ezekiel, Nigerians had rejected Tinubu before his poor campaigns in Warri, Delta state on Saturday, adding that Tinubu’s speech at the Warri campaign was a clear indication of a fall in standard of reasoning, may be as a result of old age.

The Okowa’s aide said no responsible and serious presidential candidate would ever snub traditional institutions in Warri during a campaign visit as was done by Bola Tinubu.

The statement reads: “It is not a secret the sacred place of kings in any African society. It is on this basis they are accorded with maximum regard, taking into account their unifying and peaceful roles in moulding the views of citizens for the over well-being of society.

“Nigeria as a Nation is not left out in exaltation and respect for Royal fathers, which dated back to the pre-colonial era.
Bola Tinubu, APC presidential candidate threw this universal recognition into dustbins. Arrogantly and disdainfully he shunned all traditional rulers in Delta when he came for the campaign on,19/11/2022 at Warri Township stadium.
Could Bola Tinubu have tried this in the North or his region, South West?

“Tinubu should apologize to my boss, Senator Dr. Ifeanyi Okowa. The APC candidate visited monarchs in the North and South Western parts, his first ports of call were palaces of Emirs and Obas gave him their royal blessings. But it is shameful that Bola Tinubu could come into Warri, dropped at Osubi airport, and refused to pay homage to Orodje of Okpe kingdom, host to the airport, HRM Orhue 1 major Gen ( Rtd), Felix Mujakperuo.

As if this affront was not enough, he came into Warri city where Olu, HRM, Ogiame Atuwatse ll, Utieyinoritsetsola Emiko holds sway to campaign without letting the highly respected king know that he visited his domain.

“This misnomer is another plus to the catalogue of woeful and disgraceful records of APC since its kick-off campaigns, which l called renewed hopelessness.

“The persons that l blamed in this show of shame is senator Mrs. Oluremi Tinubu, an Itsekiri woman who failed to call her husband to attend to the need for him to visit the Royal fathers. Again, I blame Omo-Agege for the blunder. Rather, all they were after is how to turn Delta State into another Lagos where only one man holds the jugular of the commonwealth of millions of people to himself.

“Though, it does not come to me as a surprise because Tinubu has made it known that Emilokan, i.e, it is his turn and right, either you vote for him or not to be president come next year.

Though it is so clear that he does not stand a chance against Atiku Abubakar, I must use this medium to advise Bola Tinubu to step down from this race because day by day, his health keeps deteriorating, the reason he could pray for PDP at the flag off his party campaign in Jos, Plateau state few days  ago. Deltans needs an apology from the ruling party and his candidate for this monumental disrespect for the state traditional institutions, the statement added.

You Can't Kill and take my property, Opukeme tells wife, orders lawyer for divorce

You Can't Kill and take my property, Opukeme tells wife, orders lawyer for divorce

By Esther Eugene, Warri

A popular United kingdom trained investigative journalist and publisher Mr. Cletus Opukeme has sent an urgent SMS, Save my soul 'SOS' to  the Divisional Police Officer ( DPO) Agbarho Police Station, Ughelli North LGA, Delta State over frequent verbal/physical threat to his life.

According to Opukeme, his estranged wife is highly violent, terribly  hot-tempered and physically strong. That she had attacked him in several occasions over minor misunderstanding from which he escaped death due to his knowledge in the act of self-defense. " This cannot continue with a woman turning his house to ring. If she does not kill me, I will kill her while defending myself. Any woman that first attacks her husband is demonic and possessed" He said.

He said his estranged wife Happiness Opukeme, an Igwere by tribe from Rivers State have three children for him in their ten years of  relationship.

He said the police had questioned Happiness sometime in February, 2022 following similar threat to his life which he reported to the police then and the police compelled her to make a written undertaking over her actions.

He revealed that his wife is after his life because  of the court marriage he had with her, believing that after his death, she will stand as claimant to his property to which she has repeatedly stated in almost every of her squabbles or misunderstandings with him.

The SOS to the police DPO and copied to family members reads:
"' My wife threats and often boasted to murder me is terribly unbecoming therefore if anything happens to me, she should be held responsible''

Opukeme told this news house that he has consulted his lawyer to file a formal divorce suit to be separated from his estranged and extremely violent and toxic wife.

He said he had other genuine grounds to divorce his estranged wife apart from the threat to life. That she had also deprived him of his congugal rights for over a year even while living under the same roof thereby suspecting unfaithfulness on her part just as all marriage understanding is totally non-existent for over the same time duration. He is begging his estranged wife not to cut his life short over his little property just because he is a calm and peaceful man who abhors violence against women generally and an advocate against such. That he may give her the property to start a new life in rented apartment with another calm and cool-headed woman that will give him peace if need be.
He urgently pleads with the police to save him from the criminal and life threatening violence intermitantly visited on him by his rigidly volitile and highly temperamental wife before she eventually takes his life.

" Since last week when he had a misunderstanding with her where he escaped one of his attacks that attracted the local vigilante to intervene and arrested her for extreme violence by destroying his house glass windows and water taps. She was detained in about 8 hours and released same day. Since then, she issued verbal threat to take his life. She had abandoned her three children, with the last one two years baby boy, disappeared to an unknown location till this moment of this publication," the statement added.

"It has come to a time when silence is no longer golden, this we the Egbema Accountability Front, has come to realize. Having watched in the last few weeks the  macabre dance of one  Barrister Napoleon Egin parading himself as Egbema kingdom Agadagba-Elect, with the backing of some disgruntled elements who are out to cause anarchy, division and further plunge our people into another era of confusion.

"Napoleon Egin and his gang of rabble rousers will not be allow to achieve this sinister plan that is nothing but a CORE detriment to progress, well-being and peace of our kingdom.
Every society has rules that binds it, just the way ethnic groups have culture and tradition that guide its way and life.

" Egbema kingdom can't be an exception. For a Pere  to emerge, the gazette which is the authority when it comes to kingship issues, expressly stated how such individuals will come through.
Napoleon Egin does not meet the criterias of the gazette, yet in his and cohorts desperation for aggrandizement, they want to bend the rules and cut corner for selfish reasons.

" Egbema Accountability Front, has critical stakeholders who believe firmly in the ONENESS and progress of our DEAR home land, we say enough is enough of Napoleon and his gang destructive voyage.
We find his watery, nebulous and caricature publication dated 16/11/2022 in which  various derogatory languages were used to described genuine process thoroughly followed by Regency Council led by Chief Johnbull Adaun that gave birth to Ambassador Meshach Eseyortiegha Ubabirasi, Agadagba - Elect.

" We find those languages to be very distasteful, disrespectful, belly aching, diversionary and attempt to paint the kingdom as group of lawless people who take pride in violence.
Let Napoleon and his gang be warned that we will not take further insults and abuse on the elders, chiefs and other illustrious sons of the kingdom because Egbema has taken position and chosen who will lead, which we expect every sons and daughters of the kingdom to support fully", the statement added.

Aladja/Ogbe-ljoh Crisis: No Peace No Campaign in WSW LGA, Group Tell Okowa

...... Says Okowa can't tackle insecurity in Nigeria since he cannot settle Ogbe-ijoh/Aladja communal crisis

Warri _____ The Independent Grassroot Liberators (IGL), a political oriented pressure group with over one thousand members with permanent voters card (PVC) in Warri South-West LGA has asked the Executive Governor of Delta State, His Excellency, Sen. Dr. Ifeanyi Arthur Okowa to convince the people of Warri South West Local Government Area in Delta State and Nigeria at large that he can tackle insecurity in Nigeria if given the mattle of leadership as Vice President by settling Ogbe-ljoh and Aladja communual crisis, adding that he will not get their support and votes come 2023 general elections if he fails to end the dispute.
The statement was made on Friday at Ogbe-ljoh Warri Kingdom, the headquarters of Warri South West LGA during a peaceful protest by various youth leaders across riverine communities, warned that Gov. Okowa and the various PDP Candidates should not dare to take their campaign to Ogbe-ljoh Warri Kingdom if the state government cannot end the Aladja/Ogbe-ljoh communal crisis that have claimed so many lives of their loved ones over the years.

Addressing the press shortly after the peaceful protest, the National Coordinator of the group, Hon. Felix Yerinbowei Company noted that, if Governor Okowa, the Executive Governor of Delta State refuse to settle the land dispute between Ogbe-ljoh and Aladja to ensure permanent peace, he should know that there will be no campaign in WSW LGA headquarters Ogbe-ljoh and IGL will never give him and his gubernatorial candidate support and votes come 2023 general elections.
Hon. Felix Yerinbowei Company who is the current Councillor Representing the good people of Ijansa/Ijelejele Ward 13 in Warri South West LGA and the National Co-ordinator of IGL made the statement to notify His Excellency Sen. He asserted that if Government workers and others cannot use the access road to Ogbe-ljoh because of troublesome Aladja community people, a government road that belongs to everybody can't be used by anyone because of this dream killing epidemics Aladja people and the Government or the governor is doing nothing about it, then he or the government should know that the road and entire territory is also not safe for any kind of campaign. So there will be no campaign until there's permanent peace restored.
In his reaction, Amb. Engr. Okosu Smart added that campaigning in the headquarters of Warri South West is unnecessary and of no meaning for now until the necessary things be done by Political leaders and Sen. Dr. Okowa.

Smart Okosu said Dr. Okowa hasn't meet up to his campaign promises from his first to second terms, and now planning again to crown the next governor of Delta State without fulfilling his campaign promises to settle the age-long communal crisis between this two Communities will not work.
While Comrade Stevenson Numah, former Youth President of Ogbe-ijoh Warri Kingdom and the National spokesman of IGL added that, the Ogbe-ijoh Political leaders should see reasons with the Independent Grassroot Liberators (IGL) and the entire Youths.

He said it is high time our leaders should stop romancing with the government to the detriment of the grassroot people and the entire kingdom, and that IGL have made up their minds to stop any political campaign activities in this critical time without proffering a lasting solution to end the crisis.
Also adding his voice to the group, the National Grand Patron of IGL, Comrd Amb. Mamamu Bene Youkore who double as the National President of Niger Delta Youth Council worldwide urged the Governor of Delta State and Vice Presidential Candidate to listen to the voice of the masses of Warri South West people and do the needful to avoid distractions of campaign activities in the forthcoming general elections come 2023.

He noted that due to the endless communal crisis, there is no social infrastructural development in Ogbe-ljoh Warri Kingdom, thereby making life difficult for the people to live.
He added that Gov. Okowa should take drastic action to use the disputed land to mount Army Base so as to put an end to the argument of who is the true owner of the land between the two communities.

Others who speaks in similar vain at the protest includes the youth president of Ogbe-ljoh Warri Kingdom, Comrade Kenneth Ebikoro, Comrade Ebi Joe and Miss Oromoni bitterly called on Okowa PDP led Delta state government to immediately proffer a lasting solution between the two communities because they can no longer be patience seeing their prospective future leaders dieing untimely as result of the barbaric killings between Ogbe-ljoh and Aladja.
