Taskforce clears illegal structures blocking water channels in Sapele

Officials of the Delta State Taskforce on Environment have demolished shanties built on road and water channels blocking free flow of water to Sapele River.

The Taskforce in continuation of the statewide demolition of illegal structures in Sapele cleared illegal structures in and around Sapele market after abatement notices served on owners of illegal structures were ignored.

Addressing newsmen during the operation in Sapele, The State Taskforce Chairman on Environment, Honourable Sylvester Oromoni said that removing the illegal structures in the market is for the interest of everybody and not a deliberate attempt to put them out of business.

"There are stores built by the State Government to accommodate traders that are laying fallow, so I implore them to use this opportunity to get a store in the market.

"This action is no punishment to anyone but the government's effort to restore the true face of our environment void of unwanted structures," he stated.

Some of the owners of the illegal attachmengs in the market said in their reaction, "we were actually served abatement notices but we were thinking they were not serious but all the same, the Local Government Council should help subsidise the store rent," she pleaded..

The Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Special Duties, Honorable Igho Akpojotor was also on ground to supervise the operation.
