Delta Taskforce, Warri South demolish illegal structures in Warri

Delta State Taskforce on Environment in collaboration with the beautification Taskforce of Warri South Local Government Council have commenced demolition of illegal structures built under high tension, waterways and others defacing the beauty of the metropolitan city of Warri.

Chairman of the State Taskforce, Mr Sylvester Oromoni said that they were served abatement notices in the past and failed to comply.

"We have served them notices to abate all the illegal structures but on daily basis they keep building more.

He therefore warned the general public to desist from building any structure in the urban cities of Delta state without first obtaining approvals from relevant authorities to avoid demolition.

"We are working in conjunction with the Warri South Council to ensure that the beauty of the ancient city of Warri is restored and we are not going back until we achieve our aim.

“We want Warri to come back to it's past glory; therefore, we will not allow people to build stores along our roads anyhow without approval.

Pointing to the right of way in Ogunu by the flyover, Oromoni stressed that “All these areas are Government land and we cannot allow people to occupy here illegally,"

Speaking to Journalists during the demolition exercise, Chairman of the Council, Hon. Dr Michael Tidi, said that there is no going back on the demolition exercise, nothing that there will be constant monitoring after the demolition to ensure that people don’t come back again.

On the demolition of illegal structures under the Ogunu bridge, Tidi said, “This place has been used by criminal elements. People come to this place and take all types of illegal drugs and they have turned this place to a den of robbers.

“Before we started this demolition exercise, we have done our investigation and we know what goes on here both in the day and at night. So what we are doing here is a welcome development by the council and the Delta taskforce on Environment.” he stated.

Other areas demolished by the team includes, all the illegal structures along the link road opposite Ogbuwangue and Edjeba, Airport by AJ fast food, NPA bypass, Deco junction, Machiva and Hausa quarters respectively.

However, the demolition exercise continues tomorrow.
